There’s one particular branch of filmmaking that seems to get overlooked more than others; animation! For whatever reason, these movies often get picked last in film school gym class, but not today! We’re giving hand drawn cells, computer animation, stop motion, claymation, anime, fairy tales and cartoons their due. Here are our picks for the Top 10 Animated Movies of All Time.
The great thing about animation and the thing that keeps it tricky to categorize is that it’s not a genre, but a style. An aesthetic choice by a filmmaker the same as a film stock. So we’re breaking animated films down by category. From fantastic Studio Ghibli fairy tales to hyper violent anime science fiction, from classic Disney musicals to Pixar movies hitting you in the feels to a mind-bending exploration of humanity through stick figures to a trippy experiment Into the Spider-verse and beyond, animated films can be the funniest, saddest and most action packed movies out there all at the same time.

“Klaus,” Netflix’s first animated film, is an origin story of Santa Claus. Because the Oscar-nominated movie appeals to nostalgia, director Sergio Pablos and his team at The SPA Studios in Madrid decided to make the film in 2D. But they also wanted to advance the look, so they developed new technology that adds details like lighting and texture to the characters that make them appear 3D. We spoke with Pablos to find out how they made the innovative film, which earned an Academy Award nomination for best Animated Feature and seven Annie Awards. “Klaus” stars Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Norm MacDonald, and Joan Cusack.

I've wanted to make an animated short film based around the life-cycle of an Autodale citizen/family for a very long time. We've only ever seen Autodale through the eyes of children. All of the other short films in the series focus on skeptical children being successfully brainwashed/indoctrinated into complacency with Autodale's dystopian ways. This short film doesn't have that arc. This short film is about the parents. These characters have NO DOUBTS about how this system works anymore...
